For many people, mowing the lawn simply means turning on the lawnmower and riding around the yard until the grass is shorter than before. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to mowing.
With the right plan and a few simple tips, you will not only have a more attractive lawn, but you will also save more time.
Wait Until The Grass Is Dry
You may want during the summer season, when temperatures reach unbearable temperatures during the day, to try to start mowing early in the cool morning hours. But if there is still dew, you may waste your time and damage your lawn. This can happen because of the high likelihood of wet grass clumping up in the discharge chute.
Instead, wait until later in the morning, when the dew dries, or mow late in the day, before the evening dew. Also, schedule your sprinklers to come on in the late afternoon or evening so that there is no extra moisture on the grass when you mow.
Keep It Long
For some people, a perfect lawn is always one that is neatly trimmed and kept consistently short. Sadly, while this may look nice, it can be detrimental to the overall lifespan of the grass.
During the hottest days of summer when your yard is competing with sweltering heat, scorching sun, and less rain, it is best to keep the grass at about 10cm in height after mowing.
Go Slower
Are you short on time or just want to finish the task faster? So going fast makes the most sense, right? But while it is tempting to go fast while mowing, it can actually create more work for you. If you don’t take your time and let the lawnmower do its job properly, you are very likely to leave some areas uncut and give your lawn a patchy, unkempt look. This means you’ll have to take extra time to re-mow to get the grass looking right.
Be Consistent
Mowing your grass haphazardly can take longer and result in an uneven cut. Instead, follow a pattern with this technique:
Start at the edge of your lawn with the discharge chute pointing toward your lawn.
Mow around the perimeter of the lawn.
When you get to the starting point, make a U-turn so the discharge chute is facing the strip you just mowed.
Continue mowing around the perimeter, making sure the discharge chute is pointing toward where you just mowed.
